04 2041 THE GAME: Future Scenario Imagining

Research // Scenario // Game

Utilise the trending forces to conduct scenario building in order to promote speculative thought with an interesting narration technique.

The out come of the forces research and design fiction is presented in a ‘Choose your Adventure’ type of game. The player is the protagonist who makes decisions on that affects the narratvie and final outcome.

Through trend scouting and utilising the 4 quadrant scenario matrix with an axis of uncertainties 2041 The Game was developed. We are living in a time where individual citizens' actions have a great impact on society."It’s 2041, USA, China and UAE have united to form the “The New Republic of United Powers” to take immediate action against climate change. You are part of this totalitarian regime and need to make the vital decisions that will determine the future of civilisation."

The decisions you make lead you to different scenarios describing the history and features of the final society civilisation is a part of. The process began by identifying several broader trends then collecting signals hinting towards them. I was greatly involved in the concept development of each matrix quadrant, narration gamification and writing of precise yet concise wording for a faster paced experience of a complex concept. After several iterations of matrixes the four scenarios are:

GOING TO MARS:

Conservationist Mars Society
A society that values its resources, and attempts to concerve as much as possible to achieve a more sustainable soicety. Resource production are limited solely to precisely how much the population needs. Technological developments are focused on reusing and reshaping materials for their maximum potential. The population is maintained through a maximum of one child per family and after child birth the mother’s uterus is removed.

Consumerist Mars Society
This society values progress, growth and development in all aspects of life. Rapid growhth and exploration is prioritized for maximum potential. Technological developments are focused on understanding the new materials found on Mars and how they can be used.

GOING TO EARTH:

Conservationist Earth Society
It is a socity which values using the minimal amount necesary for survival. Diets consits of mainly insect and plant based foods grown in vertical plant and incect harvesting factories. Citizens have to attend seminars to imbibe the ideologies and teaching of this new society. They are meant to increase their knowledge for self-sustainance and conservation.

Consumerist Earth Society
Human labor as a means to accelerate human development is at the cores of this societies values. Decades of exploitation and production has meant that the atmospher has toxic levels of pollution that can only be survived with a ‘breathing apparatus’. A large lowerclass of the population is employeed as scavengers of materials left over.

Players are meant to reflect on what aspects would they want in a preferrible future. By placing them in a scenario that draws them to absurd conclusion with minimal risk it hopes to serve as a comparative tool. If the stakes were much higher than a game what sort of decisions would they make? Could they afford to take a risk that may or may not pay out? Or those risks could lead to catostrophes. Failed outcomes and wild card are another element that has been introduce in the game.

If there is potential for catostophic outcomes would players take the risks:
