01 HDMP: Future of Data Sharing

Research // Speculative // Graphic

Today we all own multiple applications and devices that collect data from us. Do you know exactly what health data is currently being collected from you? Is the data being collected used for the purpose it is stated for? These questions have been left unanswered.

Today users are submerged in darkness over the data they generate. The current system is optimised to shroud users with a veil of deceptive incentives, leading to the digital world flooded with violations of privacy.

Vigilance over data generation within the healthcare sector is dangerously low on our radar. The healthcare system is said to generate approximately a trillion gigabytes of data annually.

CASES UNCOVERED
Researching this sector, I was able to uncover multiple cases that have been brought forward for various privacy violations especially in regards to the major company Google.

For instance, in 2019 Google had partnered with the Ascension health insurance network to digitise their data. However, it was revealed that the patient data was actually being transferred without consent, to build new AI and Machine Learning tools.

Furthermore, a subsidiary company of the Google Alphabet ecosystem called DeepMind was developing a health app called Streams. However a key misstep was the lack of legal basis upon which the patient data was shared from the NHS data base. This lead to the shutting down of a potentially life saving initiative.

TAKING A STANCE
This practice cannot continue further. Tech giants have become too influential and have acquired a lot of power through user data. Its time to take a stance.

We can see the tides turning. With giant companies like Facebook, threatening to pull out of the EU unless their demands regarding data transference were met. However instead of backing down the European lawmakers called the corporations bluff and instead Facebook was forced to take back its threat.

This practice cannot continue further. Tech giants have become too influential and have acquired a lot of power through user data. Its time to take a stance.

Let’s continue this shift and enforce a fairly traded ecosystem. No longer forcing users to give away everything in exchange for nothing. Lets get rid of the friction and animosity between users and their data and tech companies and their developments.

PARTNERSHIP
Instead I would like to propose a partnership between Google and an upcoming data sharing start-up HDMP. So that we can all progress towards a better future, together.

With Google’s influence reaching millions of users, this partnership can be the start of major change. Where the expansive resourceful ecosystem of Google Alphabet can be harvested inthe right way.

“Think about the tremendous good that can come from sharing information with the right people in the right way.”

You will be able to give your health and fitness data consensually and in return would receive benefits.

You will have control over the data you share. And instead gain benefits like analysis and perosnalised recommendations, access to the latest tools being developed and even monetary gains.

So let’s see how such a data ecosystem could be implemented:
